Coaching requirements

Coaches must complete all of the below requirements before they take the ice for practice.

USA Hockey Registration

USA Hockey registration is required for all players and coaches who take the ice.  This is effectively your insurance that helps cover medical expenses in the event of a hockey related injury.

Age Specific Online Module

In addition to your in-person coaching certification, USA Hockey requires that coaches take online courses for both the specific age of players that you will be coaching and another one covering player safety.  You only have to take each module once.

Background Check

With the new regulations from the IOC, screening will now be done on the USA Hockey website.  Screening will still be good for two years.  If the participant did the screening for the 19/20 season it will still be good for 20/21.

USA Hockey Coaching Certification

REQUIRED BY DECEMBER 31st

A coaching certification course held by USA Hockey is also required in order to coach with the Capitals. It's important to note that while this is required by Dec. 31, there are only a couple of these courses held per year in the Twin Cities. The expiration of your certification depends on the level of certification that you have achieved. Make sure to check your certification status if you are unsure.
